Does it matter? Really?

Does it matter where I placed, really? For the first ever in 20 years 5K, maybe and maybe if I was still an elite inline speed skater (see picture of me 11 yrs ago) it would matter, but alas I am no longer speed skating on skinny wheels. I'm running on chubby legs! So as a start, this is what I need to improve on later and as a matter of past practice:

Overall: 84 of 805 finishers
Over all in Women: 31 of 556
A/G 10th overall

Not sure what I would do different. I didn't feel very relaxed at all. Kept saying to myself 'just go fast it's only 3.1 miles' and 'keep up with the Orange guy' 'relax your shoulder' 'lean' 'relax' 'keep up with the Orange guy and stay behind big guy' 'don't hurt your shins running down' relax' 'last .2 miles run hard'...

Why the heck did I have my headphones on? It didn't help and won't do that again in a 5K.

I am a long way away from the winner of 18:45 but have no intention of doing that. On ward to the next race; 10K on May 30 which is all on grass but before that 10 miler this weekend.

  1. Apparently it does matter, that competitive drive doesn't just go away. It may not be skating or cycling, but the desire and drive to be the best is there all the same.
it's part of what defines you and gives you identity.
